Inter-Livery Clay Shoot

This year the Gunmakers fielded eight teams for the annual Inter-Livery Clay Shoot and once again upheld our tradition of winning prizes.

This year’s shoot, held as usual at Holland & Holland’s shooting grounds at Northwood, was once again blessed with good weather. There seemed to be fewer complaints about the traffic, or was it that we all set out earlier drawn by the thought of bacon and sausage butties before shooting?

In any case the shooting got off to an early start. The cloud cover meant optimal clay shooting conditions and the demand for bottled water by thirsty shooters remained at normal levels.

Every year there are new teams and some drop out but numbers of individual shooters remain steady at around 400, with 100 teams in all. That is a lot of lead flying from some 40,000 plus shots fired on the day, and a need for regimental organization by Holland & Holland to keep things flowing smoothly!

  • The Alan Ritson Cup for top Livery Team was won by Gunmakers ‘B’ with a score of 324
  • The Gunmakers’ Prize for Top Livery Gun went to Ross Straker of the Grocers’ Company with a score of 77
  • The John Howard Cup for top Individual Livery Side by Side went to Liveryman Mark O’Dowd with a score of 70
  • Top Livery Team Side by Side was retained by Gunmakers ‘A’, the ‘Hammer Gun Team’, comprised of Nigel Brown, Jason Abbott, John Farmer, and Derek Stimpson with a score of 293
  • The Livery Team Highest Flush Prize was won by Gunmakers ‘B’ with a score of 74
  • The Horners’ Prize for a Master and Court Team went to the Farriers’ Company with a score of 294

The overall ranking of the Gunmakers’ teams scores was

  • Overall 1st, ‘B’ with 324;
  • 5th, ‘E’ with 297;
  • 7th, ‘A’ with 293 (top side by side);
  • Equal 14th, ‘C’ and ‘H’ with 273;
  • 17th, ‘G’ with 269;
  • Equal 26th, ‘D’ with 255;
  • Equal 30th, ‘F’ with 243.

A splendid showing out of 100 teams. As usual the proceedings were rounded off with a splendid ‘hog roast’ lunch and prizegiving.

All in all, another successful event with substantial contributions to charities of choice. Thanks go to Chris Parr and the Environmental Cleaners for organizing it!
