In memory of Liveryman (Michael) Fergus Harrison Gask (20 April 1976 – 15 December 2019)

Fergie receives the Freedom of the City of London

Fergus Gask (Fergie) joined the Gunmakers’ Company in 2017 and was elected to the Livery 7 September that year. During the invasion of Iraq in 2003, whilst serving as a Corporal with 40 Commando Royal Marines, he reportedly accepted the first surrender of the war by enemy forces. He said at the time, “We started engaging their positions with GPMGs when I noticed this white flag go up. I didn’t know whether it was a trick or not, but I approached the trench anyway, probably a pretty silly thing to do if I think about it”.   As well as Iraq, he served in Northern Ireland and Afghanistan, retiring from the Corps as a Sergeant.

After the Royal Marines Fergus started working for FN UK / FN Herstal in 2010. In this latter capacity he was a valued customer and great supporter of the Proof House. He was not just a client to the Company but a personal friend to many in the Proof House and will be greatly missed for his loyalty and great sense of humour.

A memorial service was held at St Laurence, Hawkhurst, on 31 January 2020, the church the Rector pointed out, where Fergus had been both baptised and married. With over 400 people present, attendees included the Immediate Past Master Diana Berry, the Proof Master and Proof House staff, as well as the Commandant General Royal Marines and other senior military personnel. His cap and military honours with the Union Flag were displayed in the chancel and his citation was read out. He leaves a widow, Rebecca and three children, India, Finty and Rufus.

The family have asked that any donations in memory of Fergie be made to the Royal Marines Charity: https://royalmarinesassociation.org.uk/support-us/
