The King’s Birthday Parade, 15 June 2024
The Beadle’s largesse knows no bounds! Three days before the 209 th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo, at our Beadle’s invitation, five from the Company paraded promptly 08.30hrs at the Petty France gate to Wellington Barracks ready for the day. The Master, Clerk, Assistant Clerk, Adrian Powell and Beadle were then reluctantly led to the Irish Guards Officers’ Mess for a glass of fizz to prepare for the day.

After ‘coffee’, briefing and ‘the easing of springs’ our Section’s attendance was recorded as shown in the photograph above and we marched smartly off to Horse Guards Parade to witness and enjoy the parade from a privileged viewpoint near the Sovereign. Major Robbie Wilmont MBE, like our Beadle also of the Irish Guards, organised the event and, in typical Guards’ fashion, thought of everything; the pre-parade briefing, refreshments, the facilities, the seating and even, when we were getting a little snoozy in the stands with the heat and in compliance with the very best Health & Safety Duty of Care Doctrine, a refreshing and torrential downpour of rain!

Drenched but refreshed and now revived, we redeployed to the East India Club from where, thanks to the sudden dispersal of the rain clouds, we were able to witness the Royal Air Force Fly Past – before retiring for more ‘coffee’, lunch and then ‘afternoon tea’. The latter eventually and unfortunately ran out and so we had to re-parade at another location. Complying with the adage, ‘What happens on parade, stays on parade’, I cannot reveal what time I reached home, but it was after 6pm.
Our sincere thanks to the Beadle and Major Wilmont of the Irish Guards for a right Royal treat. As they would say, ‘Quis Separabit!’
