The Master flips to first in the annual pancake race, 25 February 2020

It was Shrove Tuesday and the Poulterers’ Company 16th Inter-Livery Pancake Race in Guildhall Yard. Teams assembled and donned their aprons, gloves and chefs’ hats. Masters wore gowns and novelty racers chose fancy dress – something that represented their Company or failing that, the Lord Mayors’ charities. The Gunmakers’ Cannon, courtesy of Court Assistant Simon West, roared at the start of each race. Running for the Gunmakers’ this year were Master, Roddy Richmond-Watson, Liverymen James Moor, Nicole Escue, and our novelty dressed as a cartridge, David Bontoft. With impressive enthusiasm and speed, and rather less impressive flipping skills, they completed their circuit frying pan in hand, egged on by a cheering crowd. The Master dropped his pancake, caught it mid air, and still managed to win his heat and then the Masters’ final . Congratulation to him, and to the team for their courage, and all those who turned up in support, Simon West for the acting as Number 1 on the cannon and Honorary Archivist Derek Stimpson for the photographic record.
