Common Hall at Guildhall: A Celebration of Tradition, 24 June 2025
The historic Guildhall in London played host to the annual Common Hall, a vibrant gathering that showcased the rich tapestry of London’s livery companies. This celebrated event brought together masters and representatives from various guilds, each adorned in their distinctive gowns, creating a stunning visual spectacle of colours and intricate designs. The Master, Upper Warden, Renter Warden, Past Master MacBeath, Liveryman Hughes, and the Company Beadle attended the ceremony.
Common Hall started in 1131, summoning ‘Citizens of the City of London’—today, the members of the Livery—to elect the new Sheriffs ‘for the year ensuing’, the only Sheriffs in the country to be so elected.
This year, two Sheriffs were elected: Keith Bottomley CC and Alderman Robert Hughes-Penney, both received universal affirmation. We know they will represent the 900-year-old Shrievalty with distinction in their two roles, first as the King’s Representatives to the Judiciary of the City of London, and secondly, as key members of the Civic Team supporting the Lord Mayor, in their case, subject to election, this will be a Lady Mayor, in their role as the politically neutral ambassador of the financial and professional services industry of the United Kingdom both in the UK and abroad.
As the Masters entered the grand hall, the diversity of their attire was nothing short of a feast for the eyes. Each gown, rich in its history and symbolism, represented the unique heritage and traditions of its respective livery company. From the bold hues of the Merchant Taylors to the elegant embellishments of the Fishmongers, the array of colours, including our own Company’s rather fine gown, reflected the longstanding customs that have defined these guilds for centuries.
Common Hall not only serves as a ceremonial occasion but also as a reminder of the vital role livery companies play in London’s history and economy. Their contributions to trade, craftsmanship, training, and charity are woven into the very fabric of the city, making this gathering a poignant celebration of the past and a look towards the future.
As the day concluded, the atmosphere was filled with a sense of pride and joy, a testament to the enduring spirit of the guilds and their commitment to celebrating their heritage in the heart of London.
