Quills & Drills’ Lunch 19 December 2024

The Muster

It was another sellout…  It was another hoot…  It was another unique, nay, outstanding event!

Twenty mustered for the Gunmakers’ Staff Christmas Lunch in the Receiving Room.  Not only were the usual ‘suspects’ arraigned, but also some of the stalwarts of the Company and two Hollywood Legends!  Prior to moving to the Court Room, it was all hands to the pumps to prep the ingredients whilst Alex scripted and printed our Menu Cards.

The traditional fare was cooked by the Clerk and the Beadle Emeritus, and ‘endured’ (Enjoyed – Sorry Ed.)  by all. To be accurate, the home-made Yorkshire Puds were bang on target, if not Olympic. (And yes, Alex did get one. Ed.)

The Two Stokers

The Providitor excelled as usual with his choice of wines as well as the Master staggering in with a Rehoboam of Graham’s 10 Year Tawny Port which took quite a bashing, not to mention a crate of Suffolk beers.

The lunch ended with a brief ‘thank you, you’ve all done very well, a merry Christmas’ type speech by the Master which was universally applauded for its brevity, notwithstanding the addition of a poem he had specially written for this occasion.  The meal then finished with the singing of carols to accompany the arrival of the cheese.

Post-Lunch, ‘Operation Marigolds’ was gallantly led by Past Master Graham Hill.  With a chilling cry of, ‘To the sink boys!’ he charged into the kitchen and was at the washing-up for 90+ minutes, whilst Stewards Colin Burrows and David Williams wielded some dashing drying up cloths – the plates and glasses didn’t stand a chance.  Others helped clear the rooms and courtyard, so by 6pm no one would have known we had been there.

Thank you to Alex, Andy, Tony, Louisa, David and everyone who helped make the day go with a bang worthy of the Gunmakers’ Company.
