The Inter-Livery Pancake Race Shrove Tuesday 2024
‘ Rain, rain go away, come back another day. ’ Well, it wasn’t exactly rain that stopped play at this year’s 20 th Inter-Livery Pancake Races held on Shrove Tuesday, but a persistent light drizzle that made the Guildhall Yard ‘unplayable’. The outfield was just too slippery.
All the Masters, Runners and Supporters decamped to the crypt of the Guildhall where alternative variations of the competition were held.
First, a parade of the Novelty Runners strutted their stuff to show off their imaginative and, in some cases, spectacular outfits endorsing the Lord Mayor’s charities. One sported flashing trainers, another was a green Gherkin (Really? Ed.) and another Shard! Sadly, and yet again, The Gunmakers failed to field a relevantly costumed racer … we must try harder next year!
Masters and Liverymen’s heats were then held. These ‘Runners’ stood 6 at a time and against the clock had to toss (or flip) their pancakes the most times in a timed minute. Our Master performed with adventurous panache in attempting not the most flips but the most times to stick his pancake to the Crypt’s ceiling! Although this performance generated great hilarity amongst the spectators it did not take him through the rankings to the Final.
Lunch was provided by the Clink, and everyone enjoyed this new version of the event. Perhaps the event’s motto should henceforth be, ‘Adapt and Overcome’?
